BioBlog – Hold It to Heal It: Healing Trauma with Biological Medicine

By Dr. Dickson Thom, DDS, ND

Trauma and chronic diseases are significant health concerns that can profoundly impact an individual’s life. The common understanding of the word “trauma” is that it refers to the body’s response to a deeply distressing or disturbing event that overwhelms an individual’s ability to cope, causes feelings of helplessness, diminishes their sense of self, and the ability to feel the full range of emotions and experiences. Examples of trauma in this sense can be caused by accidents, natural disasters, violence, or severe illness.

However, what most people do not realize is that we all have experienced trauma throughout our life. Perhaps not to the extent just described, but rather in the wide-ranging everyday events that shape how we now experience the world and respond to everyday stressors. Simply being human means that we experience trauma.

Chronic diseases are long-lasting conditions that progress slowly over time. These include diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and chronic respiratory diseases. The management of chronic diseases often involves long-term medication, lifestyle adjustments, and regular medical care to prevent acute crises and manage symptoms.

In the last 25 years, many studies have shown that trauma during childhood was a predictive factor for chronic diseases like cancer and heart disease in adulthood. They found that 60.9 % of adults reported at least one adverse childhood experience (ACE), such as divorce or alcoholism, while 15.6 % reported four or more experiences. Such events were significantly associated with poorer health outcomes, health risk behaviors, and socioeconomic challenges, including depression, heavy drinking, smoking, lower educational attainment, and unemployment.

These so-called ACE experiences are also closely tied to at least five of the top causes of death in the United States: heart disease, cancer, respiratory disease, diabetes, and suicide. From this research, Biological Medicine and the Brain Protocol, a unique energetics-based biotherapy, have evolved over the last three decades as a therapeutic means to reverse the effects of these traumas.

Biological Medicine synthesizes natural biological processes for preventing and reversing disease, and correcting its deepest roots, with technologically advanced diagnostic and treatment equipment as well as naturally-derived plant medicines and biotherapies. This is true healing, addressing not just the physical body, but also the mental and spiritual aspects of our lives.

In addition, the human form itself plays a role in reversing the effects of trauma. Trauma-informed movement is a therapeutic approach that integrates an understanding of how trauma affects the body and mind, using physical activity to help release and manage emotions safely and effectively. This method acknowledges that trauma can be stored in the body and manifest as physical tension or other symptoms. Movement can provide a way to process and release these trapped emotions in a controlled and mindful way.

Both trauma and chronic disease require comprehensive approaches in healthcare, including prevention, treatment, management, and support systems to help individuals maintain their health and quality of life. The connection between the two is significant; experiencing trauma increases one’s risk for developing certain chronic diseases due to the interplay of emotional, behavioral, and physiological factors.

Trauma underlies chronic disease. By attuning to your mind-body connection with proven techniques rooted in natural and Biological Medicine, you can begin to shift subconscious trauma histories to the conscious level in order to process, transform, heal, and grow. The result is optimal health the way nature intended.

Join us online on Tuesday, August 6th at 12 p.m. ET, for a special episode of BioBites called, Hold It to Heal It: Healing Trauma and Disease with Biological Medicine. During this free hour-long webinar, you will get a taste of the forthcoming in-person weekend workshop at Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, NY, on October 25th- 27th. Anyone who has a body owes it to themselves to experience the invaluable tips and tools that will be shared.
