Throughout this past month, Grow Education supported a series of events that we called Community Recipe Meetings. The purpose of these events was to gather local parents, guardians and families to share family and cultural recipes that they would like to see on the school menu.

We have some exciting news – Grow Education is expanding! We had our first official on-site meeting with the Westport Public Schools. Just as we finished fine tuning our programming, Westport Public Schools reached out with interest in starting a Farm to School project.

Since the start of my journey with FoodCorps, one of my biggest goals has been to make an inclusive lesson plan highlighting the importance of Black History Month. There is so much history of black activism, leadership, and innovation in New Bedford; curating an activity that makes students feel heard and seen is important to me.

This January, several lessons were taught to students including Grow Education’s “Mindful Bites” that walks students through a mindful eating experience. Also taught were FoodCorps lesson plans such as “Eat the Rainbow” and “Go, Grow, Glow” which emphasize the importance of eating a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables for improved health!
