BioBlog: Nature’s Laws to Live By

By Dr. Dickson Thom, DDS, ND

Throughout human history, natural medicinal methods have existed that are immutable. And yet, our culture has gradually steered us further and further away from these trusted methods. We have lost our connection to ancient habits of healing that are found all around us in nature. Instead, we seek quick-fixes and effectively outsource our health to others. These methods have now become common wisdom, but not common practice.

What can we do to take back our agency when it comes to our health? First, we have to define what health is.

Health is much more than the absence of disease. It is a goal that needs daily effort to achieve. The body is a remarkable regulatory machine that will correct imbalances and pathologies, provided it has the raw materials and sufficient time to heal. One of the most common obstacles the body must overcome daily to regain balance (called homeostasis) is the removal of the endogenous and exogenous toxins (called microbes).

Case in point: we all recently faced a global pandemic with differing schools of thought on how best to keep populations safe and alive. As we saw, the results were as varied as the approaches! As a consequence, the query of how to maintain long-term health began to shift away from folks asking, “Who can help me?” into the more pro-active and self-aware, “How can I help myself?”

The answer lies in nature. There is so much that we can do for ourselves when it comes to preventing dis-ease. In fact, we must do certain things for ourselves every day or we face illness, a poor quality of life, and diminished life expectancy.

The Basic Treatment Guidelines (BTGs) are a series of activities and supplements designed to provide the body with the support to it needs return itself to a state of balance and homeostasis. Thankfully, these are not new practices; they have been here since the beginning of our time on the earth, about 250,000 years!

We call them natural laws for survival. What exactly does “natural law” mean? There are eight billion people on the planet. And every single one has the same requirements (read: laws) for living and thriving.

What is it that you and everyone else on the planet has to do to live another day? Here are some of the basic laws:

  • breathing (the most essential)
  • drinking water
  • getting enough sleep
  • eating well
  • moving the body
  • taking care of the lymphatic system
  • engaging in social interactions
  • grounding to the earth
  • and others that come with practice

Clearly, the body already takes care of a few of the BTGs automatically. But the majority of these laws are practical solutions to take back responsibility for our own health and be our own agents for vitality.
