In today’s fast-paced world, loneliness is becoming an epidemic and it’s taking a serious toll on our health and well-being. In fact, nearly 1-in-2 adults report feeling lonely on a regular basis. According to the Surgeon General, widespread loneliness in the U.S. poses health risks comparable to smoking 15 cigarettes daily, at a cost of billions of dollars annually.

Join us on Wednesday, May 21st at 5:30 p.m., for a thought-provoking event with attorney and author, J. Walter Freiberg, Ph.D., J.D. on the evolution of loneliness and its impact on modern society. Called “the Oliver Sacks of law,” Dr. Freiberg is the author of three books on the topic of loneliness in the modern era—dubbed The Loneliness Trilogy—and is a frequent speaker on the subject of human biology and the evolution of loneliness.

To actively combat loneliness, we encourage you to attend this event with a friend. Additionally, please note that the evening will conclude with an engaging question-and-answer session, and an opportunity for continued community discussion over light refreshments.

Upon registration, guests are invited to take the UCLA Loneliness Quiz. Dr. Freiberg will incorporate this widely-used quiz, a proven measure of loneliness in scientific research, into his discussion to encourage deeper connections among attendees.

Join us for this “bring-a-friend” Southcoast community event in order to:

  • Better understand the societal and psychological factors contributing to chronic loneliness in today’s world.
  • Learn ways in which the role of nurturing behaviors in human evolution—laid the foundation for connection.
  • Discover how the feeling of loneliness is akin to hunger or thirst, and thus has a direct impact on physical health.
  • Gain insights on monitoring the quality and quantity of social relationships, in the same way we are mindful of our diets and exercise in a sedentary, post-industrial society.

This talk will give you the tools to understand the biology of loneliness as well as actionable ways to build meaningful connections in an increasingly isolated world. Don’t miss out on this chance to address loneliness in your life and the lives of those you love!
