July is bursting with activity and abundance at the Marion Institute!
The Eat Local Southcoast Challenge is in full swing, and our community is rising to the occasion—celebrating local food, connection, and sustainability. Frogfoot Farm is in peak production mode, with weekly harvests going straight to local food pantries. Our Fields to Families gleaning program is off and running, breaking records and building momentum each week!
Meanwhile, Grow Education is staying busy through the summer—supporting food pantries with fresh produce from the school gardens and celebrating a school year that saw over 20,000 student experiences. We recently had the honor of gathering with members of our Legacy Society for a meaningful luncheon in celebration of lasting impact and we’re looking ahead to fall with excitement as our MBSR course returns.
There’s so much to be grateful for—and even more to come. Scroll down for highlights, opportunities to get involved, and ways to keep growing with us!

Food production at Frogfoot Farm is reaching full summer fever pitch!
We currently are sending over 400lbs of produce per week to our food pantry partners! This will increase dramatically as we are right around the corner from seeing the first harvests of crops such as peppers, eggplant, squash, and tomatoes. Our volunteer farming crew has been working tirelessly through the increasing summer heat harvesting, tending crops, and turning over spent beds to plant new successions. As we head into mid-summer, there is much more work to do including turning our attention to planting fall crops! Volunteer opportunities are expanding to 4 days per week starting on Tuesday August 29th! Please consider lending a hand.
Frogfoot Farm is dedicated to health, equity, and sustainability—because everyone deserves access to nourishing food.

Fields to Families is Off and Running!
Having launched our Fields to Families Gleaning program just one month ago, we have already gleaned from three farms: the Fairhaven Acushnet Land Preservation Trust in Acushnet, Freed Seed Federation in Dartmouth, and Brookwood Community Farm in Canton. We have officially gleaned in two counties and served six food pantries: PACE New Bedford, Damien’s Pantry, Acushnet Council on Aging, Shepherd’s Pantry, Canton Food Pantry, and Fairhaven Council on Aging. We have gleaned 386 pints of strawberries, 229 pints of blueberries, 344lbs of lettuce, 36lbs of turnips, and 13lbs of peas. For the remainder of the season, we will continue to glean gorgeous fresh fruit from Fairhaven Acushnet Land Preservation Trust including blueberries, blackberries, peaches, pears, and apples! We also plan to work with two more farms in Dartmouth and Westport and serve additional food pantries throughout the Southcoast.
With generous support from Bristol County Savings Bank and the Massachusetts Society for Promoting Agriculture, we launched our regional gleaning program at a crucial time—when many local food pantries are experiencing significant shortages in both food and funding. What Does Grow Education do Over the Summer?
Great question — we’re so glad you asked! It’s growing season, which means the garden beds are in full bloom. But where do all those veggies go? If school is in summer session and the cafeteria is running, they’re used there. Otherwise, they’re donated to local food pantries — or sometimes, they need to go to seed. If a garden is “going to seed” you will see some new signage at the garden to communicate that and why.
This week we hosted our first field trips at Frogfoot Farm with Wareham Elementary’s summer school program. Students helped harvest beets that were donated to local families through Damien’s Place Food Pantry #FullCircle!
More exciting news to share: during the 2024–2025 school year, Grow Education provided over 20,000 student experiences! We love the work we do — but when we step back and look at the numbers, it’s a powerful reminder of the impact and reach of this program. Wow!
