About the Marion Institute
The Marion Institute’s (MI) mission is to advance a culture of health. We exist to engage individuals and communities in systems level solutions at the intersection of food, wellness, and the environment.
We are committed to developing a team that reflects the communities that we serve and strive to accomplish our goals by actively seeking people who bring diverse backgrounds and perspectives to join us in our work.
Volunteer at Frogfoot Farm – Neighbors Feeding Neighbors
At Frogfoot Farm – Neighbors Feeding Neighbors, a program of the Marion Institute, we believe that healthy food should be accessible to all. Through our Neighbors Feeding Neighbors initiative, we are strengthening local food systems and addressing nutrition insecurity by projecting to grow and donate 10,000 lbs. of fresh produce to local food pantries this season.
How You Will Help:
- Food Production – Assist in creating 45 new 100’ production beds and growing 25 crops. (Wednesdays & Fridays, 8 AM – 11 AM)
- Ecology – Help plant and maintain native hedgerows to support biodiversity. (Thursdays, 8 AM – 11 AM)
- Soil Health – Learn and apply sustainable practices to enhance soil quality for nutrient-dense food.
- Gleaning – Train to become a certified gleaner, traveling to regional farms to rescue surplus crops and prevent food waste. (Goal: Certify 10-20 volunteers this season!)
Why Volunteer?
Volunteering at Frogfoot Farm isn’t just about growing food—it’s about growing community, purpose, and well-being. Studies show that spending time outdoors, working with soil, and engaging in meaningful work can reduce stress, boost mood, and improve mental clarity. By getting your hands in the dirt, breathing fresh air, and connecting with others, you’ll experience the proven mental health benefits of farming, such as:
- Reduced stress & anxiety – Time in nature has been shown to lower cortisol levels and promote relaxation.
- Increased happiness – Physical activity and exposure to sunlight boost serotonin, a key mood-enhancing neurotransmitter.
- Stronger connections – Volunteering fosters a sense of belonging, which is essential for emotional well-being.
- A renewed sense of purpose – Knowing that your efforts help feed families in need can bring deep personal fulfillment.
These initiatives align with the Marion Institute’s core values of education, food as medicine, and equitable access to nutritious food. Farming volunteer opportunities will continue through mid-November.

What Our Volunteers Have to Say
By far, my favorite part of volunteering is the new friendships I’ve made, especially with Hannah and Farmer Scott. They have an abundance of interesting information and advice. We’ve joked that some of us (me) volunteer just so we can get helpful tips about our own gardens. It’s no lie. Hannah and Scott are always willing to share their expansive understanding of all things growing. I continue to be in awe of their breadth of knowledge. They make volunteering at Frogfoot Farm such a pleasurable experience. I look forward to seeing them each week knowing that I’m going to learn something new no matter what work they have planned for us.
