With May being Mental Health Awareness Month, we're happy to announce we are bringing world renowned author and researcher Bessel van der Kolk to Marion for a talk. His book, The Body Keeps the Score, translated into 43 languages, is the foremost text on PTSD in the psychiatric community. We highlight a number of other events geared toward preserving mental and physical health as well as big updates for our newest program, Frogfoot Farm - Neighbors Feeding Neighbors. Dig in!

Wareham Elementary School to plant spring crops

As the weather turns warmer, students at Wareham Elementary School are beginning to plant spring crops as part of a food education program. The elementary school’s STEAM – science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics – program is teaching children to farm as part of a partnership with the Marion Institute, a non-profit organization that supports health through nutrition.

March 2024 MI Newsletter

Lots of news to share in our March Newsletter! Our Connector Series event, A Conversation with Tracy Kidder and Dr. Jim O'Connell, that was originally scheduled for last November is now slated for May 2nd! - a must attend event. We also have big news to share on the progress happening at our newest program, Frogfoot Farm, with soil berms being completed and full fencing being installed around the perimeter. It won't be long now! In addition we've announced the Grow Education program is now looking to hire 5(!) new FoodCorps members to keep up with its expansion. Enjoy!

Ithaca (NY) Rotary Awards Grant to Rancho Mastatal of Costa Rica, an MI Greenhouse Initiative

The Ithaca Rotary Club has awarded two $5,000 grants to nonprofit groups in Kenya and Costa Rica for projects that will tackle climate change. In Costa Rica, the Mastate Charitable Foundation is developing a family-run fruit tree and vegetable farm that demonstrates a new model for food production, which reduces the reliance on agricultural chemicals while drawing carbon from the atmosphere.

February 2024 MI Newsletter

Our February Newsletter is jam-packed with news! We feature our new Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction training course starting up in March. There's also an update on Grow Education's progress with their "virtual Filed trip" series with the introduction of the Seed Saving Video. We show highlights from our successful Wim Hof cold plunge event as well as details on the very well attended Legislative Breakfast hosted by our Southcoast Food Policy Council, The Greater New Bedford Youth Alliance, and the Women's Alliance of Southeastern MA.
