We’re putting sunshine to work! Our Harvest Hopper—the refrigerated electric van that supports Frogfoot Farm and Fields to Families—recently got three rooftop solar panels, adding a new source of renewable energy to our food relief work.

From produce grown at Frogfoot Farm to harvests gleaned and recovered through Fields to Families, the Harvest Hopper helps us deliver fresh, local food to food pantries and community partners. Keeping that produce cool takes energy. Now, the sun can help supply some of that power.

Powering our purpose

These panels do more than run interior lights. Through a custom controller, they feed solar energy directly into the van’s main battery, helping power both the vehicle and its refrigeration.

Whenever sunlight is available, the system can collect energy automatically—while we’re on the road, unloading a delivery, or parked between trips.

Solar supplements the van’s regular charging, helping reduce the electricity we need to draw from the grid and contributing energy throughout the day. The panels also shade part of the roof, which may help reduce heat entering the refrigerated cargo area.

Why we’re excited

This upgrade brings two parts of our mission together: caring for our neighbors and making thoughtful use of our resources.

Every delivery reflects the work of farmers, volunteers, and community partners who help make fresh, health-promoting food more accessible. Adding solar power supports that work with renewable energy—and offers the potential for lower charging costs and additional driving range, depending on sunlight and operating conditions.

Whether we’re transporting a harvest from Frogfoot Farm or picking up produce through Fields to Families, sunshine is now part of the journey as we grow, glean, and share fresh food across Southeastern Massachusetts. You’ll usually find Sarah, our Fields to Families Program Manager, behind the wheel of the Harvest Hopper—so if you spot her out and about, be sure to say hi!
