Active Initiative:

AHA! (Art, History, Architecture) New Bedford

For more than 25 years, AHA! (Art, History, Architecture) New Bedford has served as New Bedford’s cultural connector and catalyst for downtown revitalization.

When AHA! launched in 1999, New Bedford’s downtown was desolate—marked by empty storefronts, dilapidated buildings, drugs and vagrancy, and virtually no festivals, restaurants, shops, or galleries. Since then, the downtown experience has changed dramatically. Today, restored historic buildings, cobblestone streets, nationally recognized cultural organizations, and thriving shops and restaurants have created an active, engaging city center.

AHA! has never wavered from its core mission: invigorating downtown New Bedford by harnessing the power of arts and culture to fuel the city’s creative economy. Each month, AHA! Nights bring thousands of residents and visitors downtown to enjoy free, inclusive programming. By coordinating more than 100 local partners—including businesses, nonprofits, and cultural institutions—AHA! has built a proven track record of creating vibrant shared experiences that boost foot traffic and increase local spending.

The AHA! monthly events have become a showcase for the talent and vitality of the New Bedford community, and there is widespread agreement that AHA! has contributed significantly to New Bedford’s remarkable resurgence. The AHA! Program centers on civic partnerships, volunteer engagement, and economic vitality—a proven model that continues to deepen our mission of growing the local economy and bringing people together through arts and culture.
