FoodCorps Educator with Grow Education @ New Bedford Public Schools
We believe that health is a human right and not a privilege. One way in which we implement this belief is by working to provide the youth of New Bedford with high quality, nutritious and culturally relevant foods. Partnering with the New Bedford Public School district, we are on our way to building gardens at each elementary school, while providing experiential programming and curriculum to elementary students across the district. We know that this will take a cultural shift – into a culture of health, and there is no better way to do that than through our education system!
As a part of this project, The Marion Institute will be hiring three, FoodCorps members for the ’23-’24 school year. These are 11 month, full-time paid positions, starting in August 2023, working directly in New Bedford’s public elementary schools that are participating in our Grow Education program, and ending in July 2024. Our goal is to support teachers and students in each school and partner with the food service department to provide healthier, delicious, fresh, culturally relevant meals across the district. We would love to hire local individuals who are passionate about food justice, healthy eating/living, and protecting the environment. Multilingual Spanish or Portuguese speakers are encouraged to apply. PLEASE SHARE!
The ideal applicant would be:
- Personable, passionate and excited about working with youth
- Able to co-teach and lead lessons with classroom teachers, work with cafeteria staff, and lead experiential garden workshops for students
- Have basic digital/technical skills and great communication skills
- A resident of New Bedford or Southcoast MA (preferred)
You do not have to be an expert or have experience in education or agriculture, but you do need to be passionate and excited to share the information! While some applicants are recent graduates, many are parents from cities in which they work.
Requirements: Applicants must be 18 years old or older and have a high school diploma.
FoodCorps provides training in this work including a week-long orientation and frequent professional development workshops throughout the service. Both the FoodCorps coordinator and Grow Education staff will also provide direct support.
The position lasts 11½ months and benefits include:
- Up to $33,000 living stipend for Service Members paid bi-weekly
- $6,895 AmeriCorps Segal Education Award, upon successful completion of your first (or second) term of service: for future schooling or repay qualified student loans.
