Transforming Cambodia Through Arts

A Contemporary Dance Workshop at AYA

Posted by samnang on 9.21.2012

From 17th-28th September, 2012, Gillian Rhodes, an American choreographer, will be leading a contemporary dance workshop for the Krom Selepak Akpiwad (Artistic Development Club), as part of the Association of Youth Arts (AYA) in Siem Reap. The workshop is centered on group choreography, both creating and performing dance. Students will learn about collaboration and group decision-making, as well as certain general techniques for creating dance. They will use this knowledge to create and perform a short group piece at an informal showing on the last day of the workshop, on September 28, at 4pm at AYA.

For the first week, each day will focus on a different aspect of dance creation, such as space, stops, concentration, entrances and exits, gestures and emotions. For each topic, the students will work on performing and working as a group through structured improvisations. The second week, the participants will split into groups of 5 dancers, and will use what they've learned to prepare a 4-6 minute dance, to be presented at the informal showing.
