Transforming Cambodia Through Arts

AYA Workshop in Siem Reap

Posted by samnang on 9.18.2012

With the facilitation of Cambodian Living Arts (CLA), the Krom Selapak Akpiwad (Artistic Development Club), as part of the Association for Young Artists (AYA), had a 3-day training workshop from September 13 to 15, 2012, on the theme of “Children Rights and Children Labor” in the Siem Reap province. There were 28 participants from the club. This workshop was conducted by Mr.Chor Chandara, Senior Project Officer at the Child Rights Foundation (CRF) and aimed to raise the artists’ awareness about their rights as young citizens in order to protect them from exploitation.

The first day training focused on the international Convention on the Rights of the Child which details who is considered a child, and what children rights are. The facilitator also explained the four basic children rights (Right to live, Right to develop, Right to participate and Right to get protection) and discussed children’s issues today, such as abuse of rights, labor, and exploitation. In addition, an educational game was organized at the end of the meeting. The second day offered the occasion for participants to debate about child’s right abuses such as physical and mental violence, sexual abuse, and neglect of children’s basic needs in life. The facilitator also mentioned what jobs are suitable for children according to the Labor Law. During the last day, participants learned about labor contracts and were able to get their many questions answered.

AYA is very excited about this workshop, and we hope that these young artists will assert their rights.
