Transforming Cambodia Through Arts

CLA supports UNESCO in the publication of a traditional music CD

Posted by Azeliz on 7.3.2012

CLA has supported UNESCO in the publication of a CD of Bunong music. This album is a collection of original songs by the creatively minded and inventive blind musician Nyel Che. This musician from the Bunong Indigenous People plays traditional music with a twist - using instruments that have the same shape and structure as the traditional, but are home-made, using recycled household items. He also composes his own music, making original songs, whilst remaining true to the traditional form. Patrick Kersalé, an ethnomusicologist captivated by Che’s traditional tunes, recorded this compilation in 2010 during his travels to Mondulkiri province.

Produced with the support of the UN-Spanish Millennium Development Goals Achievement Fund, the CD will be available for sale by this summer. But if you can't wait for it, Nyel Che plays every day at the Bou Sra waterfall (Mondulkiri Province).

Listen to an extract of Nyel Che's lyrics: "Sunday’s gathering"

To get more information about Patrick Kersalé’s recording project, have a look to his web TV dedicated to international traditional music : Geozik.
