Do Not Squander Your Life

Posted by Brooke on 8.9.2011

An interview with Roshi Joan Halifax

"I don't know what it takes to speak truth to power in easy terms. I can honestly say...I think it takes a broken heart. I don't think you can speak truth to power from a platform that is cognitive. I think that you just have to perceive the suffering, really feel it, and take a stand...and being willing to being destroyed. Nothing is going to stand between you when your heart is just wild and wide open . Not money, or status, no promises; you just can do the best you can.

I think that there are lots of good people who have done it. I do it in my little way. I love what Gandhi did, Thich Nhat Hanh has done it. Mother Teresa...I mean, there are many rol models, certainly people like Tutu and Nelson Mandela. Many people in the world today are doing it, like Alan Senauke and others... You just do it. And you can't also be attached to the outcome. You just go for that. What you feel is the highest good...you really address the issue of suffering, and then, if you get destroyed, well, so are you, get destroyed. And you just stand up, on the other side of it, and keep on..."
